Self-Pay Therapy:

I am a Self-Pay Therapist which means that I'm not on any insurance panels and am considered an out-of-network provider. I cannot bill an insurance company in your name, nor will I be able to interact with insurance companies directly, or advocate on your behalf. However, I would be happy to provide you with a statement, also known as a "Superbill" that you can submit to your insurance if you want to attempt to receive reimbursement for seeing an out-of-network provider.

My main priority is to make sure you get the best possible care you can receive. Many people do not realize that when you use insurance there is a third person in the therapy session, the insurance company. Insurance can dictate the cost, the amount, the kind, and if you can even receive therapy. More information is below and I'm also happy to discuss this more with you on the phone or in person for a scheduled appointment.

Benefits of Self-Pay Therapy

  • The convenience of being able to find the right therapist for you. Insurance gives you a limited number of therapists and therapies to choose from while Self-Pay allows you the freedom to choose from any therapist the one that works for you.
  • Being able to have control over who your therapist is, what kind of therapy works for you, and how to achieve your goals. Insurance companies mandate a diagnosis, limit number of sessions and kind of treatment you can get. Also, if what you discuss in therapy does not correspond to your diagnosis your therapist must redirect the discussion back to the symptoms of concern or provide another diagnosis to the insurance company. If they feel that your diagnosis is not justified or you have exceeded the number of session they provide, insurance providers can demand to see your mental health records. Some insurance companies can also mandate that you take medication before approving therapy sessions for you.
    • Additionally, lasting change occurs when you have a trusting relationship with your therapist which typically doesn't happen in 6-10 hours (the typical amount of sessions insurance companies provide). Many mental health issues are complex and have multiple underlying causes which take time to discover and work through. Ending therapy work too soon can leave clients vulnerable to relapse.
  • Confidentiality plays a big role in the relationship between you and your therapist. The best way to ensure the highest level of privacy is to pay for therapy out-of-pocket. Mentioned above is the fact that therapists are mandated to provide a diagnosis to insurance companies which can lead to serious consequences. Once the therapist submits a claim your confidential information is processed by the insurance provider and stored in their database. The therapist has no further ability to control the dissemination of that information. It becomes a part of a permanent record. Some diagnoses carry stigma and can be used to justify decisions from those who have legitimate reasons for accessing your records such as future employers or life insurance coverage. In addition, there are circumstances under which an insurance company can audit a therapist’s treatment notes. Through Self-Pay you do not have to worry about your insurance company being involved or communicating your involvement in therapy.
  • Paying out of pocket increases the value of therapy by providing motivation. Some self-sacrifice through budgeting and paying for therapy makes the relationship more significant and carries more weight for the client. It also provides an opportunity to explore self-worth, dependency, trust, and other issues related to affordability and cost in therapy.
